By completing Apex Career School’s Medical Coding Course, the student will be prepared to sit successfully for the CPC certification exam. This exam tests the required competencies to perform the job of a professional coder, specializing in coding for services performed by physicians and non-physician providers including physician assistants and nurse practitioners. APC students will have multiple options for their course of study:

Take only the medical coding course, whether this is your first time learning about medical coding or whether you’re taking the course as a refresher to update your coding knowledge & skills. This option does not include sitting for the CPC exam, getting your CPC Certification, or completing the practicum.

This course is useful for:

• People who have previously taken a medical coding course and/or work in the medical coding industry and would like an educational refresher on updated and pertinent information in the industry
• People who are interested in the medical coding industry and would like to learn more on an educational and/or avocational level
• People who are interested in learning medical coding because they are considering a future career in medical coding but are not sure if it is the right fit for them

This level of learning will include the medical coding course as well as a voucher to sit for the Certified Professional Coder exam. Vouchers cover 2 exam attempts. Upon successfully passing the exam, you will be awarded with a “Certified Professional Coder – Apprentice” certification. To earn your CPC Certification, you are required to have 2 years of experience in the coding industry. If you complete the medical coding course with 70% or above on all of your curricula tests, you are automatically credited with 1 years’ worth of experience, allowing you to gain your Apprentice Certification upon passing the CPC exam.

This course is useful for:

• People who are interested in starting their journey into the world of medical coding, as a profession
• People who may have had some previous education in medical coding, but would like to take it to the next level with formal training that will result in their certification on the apprenticeship level
• People who have previously taken a medical coding course and/or work in the medical coding industry and would like an educational refresher on updated and pertinent information in the industry that results in an updated apprenticeship certification

This level of learning will allow the student to complete the medical coding course, take the medical coding practicum and sit for the CPC exam with the potential of earning their full CPC certification without any restrictions. To earn your CPC Certification, you are required to have 2 years of experience in the coding industry. If you complete the medical coding course with 70% or above on all of your curricula tests, you are automatically credited with 1 years’ worth of experience. Upon completing the included practicum, you will be credited with a 2nd years’ worth of experience, allowing you to gain your full certification upon sitting for and passing the CPC exam.

• People who are interested in starting their journey into the world of medical coding, as a profession and earning their certification without limitations
• People who may have had some previous education in medical coding, but would like to take it to the next level with formal training that will result in their certification without the apprenticeship limitations
• People who have previously taken a medical coding course and/or work in the medical coding industry and would like an educational refresher on updated and pertinent information in the industry that results in an updated certification without the apprenticeship limitations

Graduates who successfully earn the CPC credential have proven expertise in physician/non-physician provider documentation review, abstract professional provider encounters, coding proficiency with CPT®, HCPCS Level II and ICD-10 CM, and compliance and regulatory requirements for physician services on a national level.

The CPC® certification confirms proficiency in the correct application of CPT®, HCPCS Level II procedure and supply codes, and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes used for coding and billing for medical claims.  With this validation, you should be able to efficiently work in a physician’s office as a certified medical coder.  Upon being certified as a medical coder, you are beginning your journey towards an in-demand career within the professional medical industry.
